Development of the Baby

Congratulations! Your baby, who was made up of a stack of cells in his first weeks, is now considered an individual at the end of 24 weeks!

Since the development process that allows them to breathe in the outside world in their lungs is largely completed, from this week on, your baby can survive with medical help in a situation such as preterm birth. For this reason, a 24-week-old baby is considered a separate individual in America. In the UK, the age limit is 24 weeks to live legally.

Your baby’s senses have greatly improved at 24 weeks of pregnancy. As brain cells develop, the baby can now respond more consciously and their perceptions have improved.

At the 24th week of pregnancy, your baby can now hear sounds very well. You can both put on calming music and talk to your baby whenever you can. You can make them feel good if you say affectionate, positive words to them. You can even plan the delivery with them by talking. If you say words that you will have a very healthy and positive birth together, they will feel it too. You will be surprised by the positive reflections of such discourses on birth.

The sense of touch also works well at 24 weeks of pregnancy. For example, if you press softly on your stomach, they may feel it and react to you.

As you inhale the amniotic fluid, both the respiratory and digestive systems continue to develop. Black poop called meconium continues to form in the large intestines.

Baby Movements at 24 Weeks Pregnancy

At the 24th week of your pregnancy, your baby’s movements continue to accelerate. They are still busy testing their developing muscles because their range of motion is wide. You can also feel some of these movements. The development of their senses is also reflected in their movements. For example, you may immediately notice that he/she makes jumping movements when he/she hears loud music or that his/her movements accelerate when you eat something sweet such as chocolate.

Ultrasound Image

In 25-week pregnancy ultrasound images, you can see your baby in motion. Or they could be sleeping. Their comprehension is improving. For this reason, you can see that them can easily bring their thin fingers to their face and even hold the umbilical cord.

Changes in the Mother's Body

How many months is 24 weeks? You are in the 6th month of pregnancy. You’re close to leaving 2/3 of your pregnancy behind.
In the 24th week of pregnancy, your uterus continues to rise to the level of your upper belly button. The height of the fundus (the top of the uterus) is now about 24 centimeters. Since your rib angles will also change as your uterus rises, you may feel mild pain in your chest area from these weeks. The pressure that builds up in your stomach and intestines can cause you to have digestive problems.
As your blood volume increases, your skin gains a healthy appearance, your hair does not fall out, and therefore it thickens. However, your hair that does not fall out during pregnancy will fall out after birth.
If no sugar has been detected in your urine before, and therefore it has not been done before, your doctor may request a sugar loading test that you can have in 24–28 weeks. Today, the sugar loading test is among the routine tests, but it is performed with the approval of the expectant mother. 100 grams of glucose loading test (OGTT) is performed for expectant mothers at high risk for diabetes, and 50 grams of glucose loading test (PPG) is performed for those at low risk. It doesn’t matter if you’re hungry or full on PPG. Performing the test is of great importance in terms of detecting gestational diabetes. Because gestational diabetes can cause the baby to be born overweight and cause some risky situations for the health of both the mother and the baby. A diet in which sugar intake is kept under control is recommended to expectant mothers whose gestational diabetes is detected, and restrictions are made on sugar-containing foods.

Points need to be considered

From the 24th week of pregnancy, problems with your digestive system can make you even more uneasy. Here are a few suggestions to relax your digestive system during pregnancy…

– Eat little and often so that your indigestion problem does not cause conditions such as reflux,

– Eating yogurt or drinking milk will help you maintain the acid balance in your stomach,

– Do not consume spicy and fatty foods,

– Do not consume too much liquid during meals. Otherwise, you may unnecessarily inflate your stomach and trigger the reflux problem,

– Do not consume heavy foods before going to bed at night,

– If you have severe indigestion, tell your doctor about your condition. It will probably recommend you a medicine that will relieve your stomach,

– Do not forget to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables for your constipation problem,

– Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day between meals,

– If you do not have a health disability, exercise regularly every day. Moving gets your gut moving.

– Driving can become a nuisance as your belly grows. Especially wearing a belt. However, never enter traffic without wearing a seat belt. You should wear your seat belt as usual. Don’t worry if a sudden brake puts pressure on your baby. Remember, it is protected inside the amniotic fluid,

– At 24 weeks of pregnancy, your feet may expand and swell. Due to the hormone called relaxin, whose function is to make the hip area flexible for birth, a stretch and expansion occur in your feet as well as in all joints. After birth, the elasticity in your bones will return to its original state. But still, prepare yourself for the possibility of your foot growing to number 1 in the postpartum period. It is useful to choose comfortable shoes without heels during pregnancy in order not to increase the swelling in your feet and not to cause pain.

Nutrition at 24 Weeks Pregnancy

At 24 weeks of pregnancy, as your baby’s bones become stronger, your need for calcium increases. So make sure you’re getting enough calcium. It will be sufficient to take 1000-1500 mg of calcium per day (this ratio corresponds to 4-6 bowls of yogurt). Make sure you eat enough yogurt, milk, kefir, and cheese during the day. If you don’t get enough calcium, your baby will use your calcium stores to develop. For this reason, getting enough calcium is also important for maintaining your own dental and bone health.
